Abstract

So far, there are no questionnaires for mental health risk assessment that satisfactorily meet the provisions of the Work Act on Occupational Safety and Health and the requirements of DIN EN ISO 10075-3. The aim of the wave 1 and 2 surveys was therefore to develop a reliable and valid questionnaire for measuring mental health at workplace, the Munich Employee Health Questionnaire (MEHQ). To validate the MEHQ, a longitudinal design (wave 3) was used to test, if stress indicators (=predictors) can predict stress symptons, health status, turnover intention and days absent (=criteria) one year later. The survey was conducted online, with a total of 1523 employed persons participating. The process of questionnaire development and the results are presented in detail in Bettina Maria Zweck's dissertation (2017).

Study Description

Research Questions/Hypotheses:

The aim of the wave 1 and 2 surveys was to develop a reliable and valid questionnaire for measuring mental health at workplace. The longitudinal design (wave 3) was used to test, if stress indicators (=predictors) can predict stress symptons, health status, turnover intention and days absent (=criteria) one year later.

Research Design:

Fully Standardized Survey Instrument (provides question formulation and answer options); repeated measurements

Measurement Instruments/Apparatus:

Test development and test quality criteria (wave 1, 2) are documented in detail in Zweck (2017).

Data Collection Method:

Data collection in the absence of an experimenter

Population:

Working people in Germany

Survey Time Period:

Wave 1: 11 May to 23 May 2016
Wave 2: 25 August to 9 September 2016
Wave 3: 30 November to 13 December 2017

Waves 1 and 2: independent sample
Wave 3: dependent sample (participants from wave 1 or wave 2 were interviewed again)

Sample:

Quota sample (quotas: education, age, sex; template: Federal Statistical Office Germany)

Gender Distribution:

48,2% female subjects (n=734)
51,8% male subjects (n=789)

Age Distribution: 15-65 years (and older)

Spatial Coverage (Country/Region/City): Germany

Subject Recruitment:

The sample was recruited from an online access panel of Kantar Germany GmbH. The respondents of this online panel receive points for each questionnaire completed, which, from a certain number of points, can be redeemed for vouchers or gifts.

Sample Size:

wave 1: 524 individuals; wave 2: 999 individuals; wave 3: 609 individuals

Return/Drop Out:

Wave 3 involved 196 subjects from wave 1 and 413 subjects from wave 2.
